Beacon Barns – Private House, Kent

  • Budget: £250 000
  • Status: Under construction

The conversion of two existing agricultural barns, one from the late 19th century and the other from the 1950’s. We were requested by the planning authority to retain the agricultural appearance of the existing structures as far as possible. The only additional constructed element is the glazed link between the two barns. The lower, more recent barn has been clad in rough sawn cedar planking over an external insulation system fixed to its existing single skin fleton brick walls, with additional window openings formed along the south elevation giving views across the South Downs. The lower barn provides the open plan living accommodation, while the higher and older barn provides ground and first floor bedrooms and bathrooms.
